We Want to Make Japan More Accessible

Hi! I'm Alex, the developer of Mugi. I'm originally from the US and moved to Japan in 2015 through the JET Program. After that I joined Mercari, where I worked as a translator/interpreter before transitioning to software development. I'm now a solo developer and writer trying to help people learn Japanese and live fulfilling lives in Japan.

Moving here has changed my life. It's a country with amazing opportunities for international residents, but language is still one of the biggest barriers to fully experiencing it. I'm creating Mugi to help as many people as possible overcome that barrier, but in an enjoyable and sustainable way.

This is Mugi, the real one! In addition to being Alex's boss, she's the inspiration for the app's name and mascot. She's been a loyal companion during long study sessions, late nights coding, and everything in between.
